Many classic walks here are marked and busy, so you can do them alone. Dolomites guided hikes earn their price on logistics, exposed ground, weather calls and the stories you would otherwise walk past.

Straight answer
The honest starting point: a lot of the famous hiking in the Dolomites is well signed and well trodden. The Municipality of Auronzo describes the Tre Cime loop as about 400 m of height difference over 9 to 10 km, on well marked trails without particular technical difficulty.1 No permit is needed to walk there; only motor access is regulated.6
The Cortina tourism office rates the walk from Bai de Dones to Rifugio Cinque Torri as easy, 5.6 km with 302 m of ascent.7 The 5 Torri tour from the top of the chairlift is also easy, a 2-hour walk that passes trenches of the First World War.89 On routes like these a fit walker with a map, good shoes and a weather forecast does not need anyone to show the way.
That is the case for self-guided Dolomites hiking: you set your own pace, you stop where you like, and you pay only for parking, lifts and food at the huts. If you are comfortable reading a trail map and you pick days with a stable forecast, the classic loops and hut walks are open to you.

It leads from Rifugio Auronzo to Forcella Lavaredo.13
The picture changes on harder or more exposed ground. The standard path to Lake Sorapis, path 215 from Passo Tre Croci, turns more demanding after a flat start, with metal ladders and exposed ledges fitted with wire ropes; Cortina's tourism office rates the whole hike for experts.214 People who freeze on ledges often turn back there, and a guide who knows the spot makes the difference between turning round and getting through calmly.
Via ferrata routes need kit and technique: the Innerkofler route up Monte Paterno near the Tre Cime is rated medium difficulty and needs proper via ferrata equipment.15 In winter the municipality advises against going up to the Tre Cime at all unless you are equipped for winter hiking or with a mountain guide.3
A guide also takes on the decisions you would rather not make alone: whether a front coming over the ridge means turning early, whether a snow patch in June is safe to cross, whether the group needs a shorter variant. Those small calls, made by someone who walks the same slopes every week, are exactly what a local professional is for.

The best way to go on a hike in complete safety is to rely on mountain professionals: mountain, nature, hiking and medium mountain guides are perfectly trained and know the territory very well.
Guiding in the Italian mountains is a regulated profession, not a hobby with a badge. The reference is Law no. 6 of 2 January 1989, which defines the mountain guide as someone who professionally leads people on rock and ice ascents or on mountain hikes.1819 A second title, the mid-mountain leader, covers hikes on mountain terrain but excludes glaciers and any route that needs alpine techniques and equipment.20
Both must by law carry insurance for their clients and take refresher courses every three years.21 The Veneto association of guides adds that you have the right to ask for the professional card and check the register.4 Its register lists 225 professionals, among them 129 mountain guides and 72 mid-mountain leaders.22
You will also meet other titles on listings. One guided day near Cortina is led by a certified International Mountain Leader, and a private sensory walk by a Certified Environmental Hiking Guide. Read which title the listing names and match it to the terrain: a walking guide is right for trails, a mountain guide for rope, ice and via ferrata.

At the Tre Cime the hard part is not the walk, it is the road. Cars may only drive up to the car park at Rifugio Auronzo with an online reservation, and the 2026 price for a car is 40 euros.1016 The ticket is valid 12 hours from your booked time, and cancellation is free only up to 5 days before.2311
The bus is the alternative, but in July and August the municipality advises against boarding in Misurina because of long queues.24 The guided loop sidesteps all of this: the guide picks you up in Misurina and drives you up the toll road, and the toll is included in the price.
Add the time you would spend comparing bus timetables, watching the booking calendar and driving the narrow road yourself. If your days in the Dolomites are few, that saved planning is often what tips the decision towards a guide.
Walking alone at the Tre Cime by car costs the road ticket and whatever you spend at the huts. With a guide, the site tour starts from $150 per person with the road included. A full day with an International Mountain Leader, in a group of up to 10, starts from $231.
The Cortina mountain guides publish their group dates too. A group day on the Strobel via ferrata costs 150 euros per person and only runs with at least 4 participants.25 Private guiding for your own party costs more, as the guide cost page of this site shows with real listings.
Self-guided Dolomites hiking is not free either once you add the extras: hut lunches, lifts, buses and sometimes a night at altitude. Cortina's tourism office also advises carrying cash, since cards may not work at the huts, especially in bad weather.26
If you walk without a guide, borrow the habits guides follow. Cortina's tourism office suggests starting early, when the weather tends to be more stable and you avoid coming back after sunset.12 It recommends local weather reports such as ARPAV next to your usual app.27
Do not count on your phone for navigation: the municipality notes that the signal along the Tre Cime trail can be limited.28 Carry a map, tell someone your route, and know that the emergency number in the mountains is 118.5
Hut opening dates also decide what is possible. In 2026 Rifugio Locatelli closed on 27 September, while Rifugio Auronzo stayed open until the end of October, weather permitting.2930 The municipality asks hikers to contact a hut before setting off to confirm it is open.31
You do not have to choose once for the whole trip. Plenty of hikers book a guide for the first day, learn how the trails are signed, how fast the weather moves and what the huts offer, and then walk the following days alone with far more confidence. The guided Tre Cime loop works well for that opening day, because it covers a classic route and the guide explains what you are seeing as you go.
Another split is by terrain rather than by day. Walk the easy, busy loops yourself, and hire a professional only for the ground that needs one: a via ferrata, a summit with rock steps, a route with snow left in June. That keeps the cost down while the risky part of the holiday is in trained hands.
Whatever you choose, keep the free cancellation in mind. The GetYourGuide hikes on this page can be cancelled at no charge up to 24 hours before, so you can book a guide as a safety net and cancel if the forecast and your confidence say you can go alone.
